EZASE - KASI Business Fridays: National Campaign

The EZASE - KASI Business Fridays: National Campaign will be launched at the Century City Conference Centre and Hotel on 26 August 2016 Friday, with around 150 stakeholders and guests attending and Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, giving the keynote address accompanied by both the Department of Small Business Development and Department of Tourism respectively.

The brainchild of entrepreneur Siyanda Mtulu, EZASE - KASI meaning 'from the township', aims to boost township economies nationwide. After this week’s Cape Town launch it will be launched in  all other provinces through EZASE - KASI Vision 2030 Imbizo (Community & Stakeholder Engagements) road show to other major cities.

From restaurants and fashion designers to beauty salons and constructions companies, the project encourages local companies (Corporate SA) and Capetonians in general, to look to the townships for their requirements as a way to 'Boost Township Economy'

In addition to being asked to wear at least one item produced by a township fashion designer, those supporting the campaign on Fridays will be asked to take their staff/visitors/guests to lunch in the townships, fill up at township petrol stations and generally make an effort to use goods and services produced in townships. Businesses in Gugulethu, Nyanga, Langa and Khayelitsha are on board and Mtulu sees this expanding to other areas as the campaign grows.

“The township economy continues to be an under-developed and under-rated sector of the SA economy and this sector is not leveraged enough to revitalize the township economy,” said Mtulu, who owns INGUQU Development (Pty) Ltd and last year owned a pub & grab outlet that didn’t yield the expected returns, leading him to come up with EZASE - KASI Initiatives.

“We were doing everything right,” he said, “but wondering why we weren’t having the expected returns. So I thought, why don’t we become the catalyst and take corporates by the hand? Many people haven’t ever been to the townships. We need to show them that it’s not such a bad place after all."

The campaign has aligned itself with the Ministry of Small Business Development, Ministry in the Presidency - National Development Plan (NDP) Vision 2030 which encourages “support for small businesses through better coordination of relevant agencies, development finance institutions, and public and private incubators”. Hence, EZASE - KASI Vision 2030!

The campaign already has the support of the Proudly South African, SABC WC, NYDA WC, the KHAYELITSHA Business Forum and proudly sponsored by SANTAM, Century City Conference Centre & Hotel and Independent Media.

“My goal is for businesses to be able to thrive, rather than just survive,” said Mtulu. “It’s hand-to-mouth for many of them and we want to change that by having every South African to play his or her part. We want to stimulate job creation and contribute positively to the economic growth of the country.”
